Rats in the Bible

There are not a lot of references to rats or mice (KJV) in the Bible. The first is Leviticus 11: 29 where the eating of rats and other animals is forbidden. They were and are used as food by the people in surrounding countries. You can see Peter’s dream in Acts 10: 12 containing all of these animals.  If you have ever owned mice or hamsters you know they like to surround themselves with their fecal droppings and it is a safe bet that is why God did not want them eaten. The second reference is the one that most people think about when you talk about rats or mice in the Bible; 1 Samuel 6 tells the story when the Philistines have captured the Ark and God inflects them with tumors and they send a guilt offering of golden rats and tumors. The last verse is Isaiah 66:17 were a special curse is reserved for those who go to pagan temples and eat rats. 2 Kings19: 35 historically is connected to rats chewing on equipment and spreading the disease to Sennacherib’s army. Chewing and gnawing on things and destroying fields of grain is what rats/mice do and they are really good at it.

See Rats #2 for ideas about their meaning and appearance in dreams.

Several references will tell you that there are many species of rodents (twenty-three at least) in the land of Israel. They are hamsters, sand rats, Jerboas (a hopping rat with big ears), and a gopher/groundhog/mole-like animal. My NIV concordance specifically listed Jerboas as a possibility for the animal in Samuel. The pictures are a sand rat and the sore is from a parasite that uses them as a host for their larva. If those sores are what the Philistines had no wonder they wanted to get rid of the Ark of God.

The Bible and Science – Cold/Hot

The Bible and Science – Cold/Hot

To each one of us, grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. Ephesians 4:7(NIV)

Cold or hot are sensations or feelings. I think when we say cold or hot our minds compare things to how we feel in air or water. Most of us will say solid water (ice) is cold (32°F) or hot is steam (gaseous water) at 212°F. The melting point of nitrogen is -345.82 °F and its boiling pointnitrogen is -320.44°F whereas iron melts at 2795.0°F and boils at 4982°F so trying to compare them with water really does not work well. (See Why Cold or Hot)

All too often, in Christianity, we compare people using the terms cold or hot – unfair. Not everyone is nitrogen but we all aren’t iron either; God knows when we are cold, hot, or lukewarm. God made us all different but we are still part of His Body. What He told us to do was love one another.

By the way, nitrogen is 78% of air and an important part of protein and iron is used for all cannon 1sort of building and structural components and is needed in your blood to carry oxygen.

∞Father, help us to love one another so that everyone will burn brightly for you.

The Bible and Science – Why Cold or Hot

The Bible and Science – Why Cold or Hot

Revelation 3:15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were cold and hoteither one or the other! (NIV)

I want to look at the idea of cold and hot from the aspect of food/germs. Hot food will actually kill germs while chilling food will not kill germs but at least make them inactive. But the “lukewarm” temperature in verse sixteen is just right for rapid growth of many germs that can harm a person. The temperature extremes of cold or hot will render unwanted organisms “safe.” The lukewarm condition will let all sorts of harmful things grow inside of you.

This is definitely a metaphorical example because the context is “deeds or work” that you are doing in your life. So, your deeds should be wholehearted or not at all but doing them halfheartedly will lead to problems.

∞ Father, may my works be done with a good attitude and directed for Your glory. Amen.

The Bible and Science – Glucose

Matthew 28:19b In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit

It is always fun to see a picture of the Trinity in Creation this one is in glucose the primary energy source for our bodies. Its chemical formula is C6H12O6 glucose

Carbon is the “backbone” of glucose and most other molecules that we need for living. It forms bonds by sharing electrons with other atoms. In its pure form it can be something common like graphite (pencil lead), lampblack, or something valuable like diamond. It has an atomic number of six (which is the number of man). Carbon would the model of the Father: stable, all about man, and holds things together.

Hydrogen is a very explosive gas and is the smallest of any atom. We are just starting to realize its potential as an energy source. Hydrogen would be a picture of the Holy Spirit; very powerful and a source of energy we need to use.

Oxygen is the gas in the air we need to live. It has an atomic number of eight (number of new beginning). Could anything be a better picture of Jesus? In Him we have a new beginning and is our very life if you are a believer.

As glucose these three elements form the molecule that we need to live. It is a quick energy source that we can use immediately.

∞ Father, Jesus, and Holy Spirit thank you for working together for our good and being the source of our life.

Frogs in the Bible

Frogs

In the Bible frogs are mentioned in two contexts: in Exodus 8 as the second plague and in Revelation 16 where evil spirits look like frogs. In Exodus, the Lord is freeing His people from Egypt. Pharaoh and his country have been selected to show the glory of God and the plagues are Jehovah showing His power over the gods of Egypt. His “miraculous signs and wonders” start in chapter 7 with Aaron’s rod/snake swallowing the magician’s rods/snakes. (Reflections on these later; so, back to the frogs.)

Chapter 7 ends with a timestamp of “seven days.” Chapter 8 begins with Moses asking for the release of the people or frogs will invade the land. I believe in the supernatural, but I also think that God uses His natural laws. I don’t see where the Nile was changed back so did seven days allow for clearing of the water? Since Father God had been planning this, it seems reasonable that the tadpoles were in place so they would have been breathing air by this time. I looked for the life cycle of Egyptian toads/frogs and couldfrogs_210648african toad not find times for the growth of the animals. Their predators (fish, another god) had been killed in the polluted water so more would have been available for the invasion.

A frog goddess Heqet (Heket) was revered and connected with fertility and childbirth. Her depictions were either a frog or a woman with a frog’s head. She symbolized new life and/or fruitfulness, and it is possible that her priestesses were midwives. The frog became the symbol for 100,000 or “immense number.” The “hefnu” (symbol) was because of their fertility and the association with water (another god) made them a positive and potent symbol. Because they were held as sacred the Egyptians would not have killed the invaders. In researching Egyptian toads/frogs some of the species have a mildly toxic secretion, which could have caused some people to scratch the area where they were touched. So, contact with the animals would have been very unpleasant. They also would have been active during the day or night and the toads could have traveled away from canals. Part of the judgment was that they would come upon the people and into ovens and bread kneading troughs. At first, you think this is just so the people would have a hard time making food but beer in ancient Egypt was made in conjunction with bread making. Beer was a very important commodity in Egypt and was actually a payment for labor. In God’s sense of humor shutting down beer making actually shut done all work in Egypt. Oh, one Egyptian word for beer is heqet or heket the name of the frog goddess. (Father God shut down another Egyptian god in the beer/yeast cult.) (See yeast) One complaint against the children of Israel was that they were very abundant, so this judgment on Heket is even more ironic since frogs were the symbol for abundance. 10_Eqyptian_gods_10_Plagues.pdf (rice.edu)

This plague and the actions of Pharaoh and his magicians are interesting in their own right. In Exodus 8:22 God makes a distinction between Israel and Egypt but with the frogs, everything is “you and your people” so it makes you wonder exactly who was plagued. Because “bedroom and bed” are mentioned it leaves to wonder if the plague started at night. With the blood and frogs, it seems that all the magicians could do was add to the misery of the people by calling more of the plague upon them. It seems that Pharaoh would have told the magicians to rid the land of the frogs but it is Moses and God who is finally left with ridding the land of the frogs so they could make them but not get rid of them. My question is why did Pharaoh wait to get rid of the frogs? The piling up of the frogs instead of burying or throwing them back into the Nile probably stems from the fact that they were sacred. One commentary mentioned that they may have died of anthrax or of dehydration while others suggest lack of food.

The other mention of frogs in the Bible is the Seven Bowls of Wrath that are poured out in Revelation 16. These Bowls closely resemble the judgments of Egypt’s gods but the frogs here are evil spirits that come out of the mouth of the dragon, beast, and false prophet. They are released after the Euphrates River is dried up. Their mission is to perform miraculous signs thus bringing the kings of the earth to Armageddon. Going back to the first appearance you have to think that those signs will be abundant and probably deal with the economy and may have a religious overtone.
