Jeremiah 23:5 NIV

“The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
“when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch,
a King who will reign wisely
and do what is just and right in the land.

The references to the Branch that I found are Isaiah 4:2,11:1, Jeremiah 23:5, 33:15, and Zechariah 3:8, 6:2.  I am sure that these and other verses lead to Israel thinking that the Messiah would be a military/civic leader.
